The Bottom Line: Know to Flow

Road, Pavement, or Highway Markings regulate the use of the road, street or highway. They give information to drivers that they should know and obey. They have the same law enforcement practices as signs or signals.

TYPES OF ROAD MARKINGS

  • White lines separate traffic going the same way when there is more than one lane. You are not allowed to pass or overtake another vehicle, change lanes, or increase speed. Slow down. White lines may also show edges of roads.

  • Broken or dotted white lines indicate passing or overtaking is permitted when safe.

  • Yellow center lines separate traffic flow going on opposite directions.  You are not allowed to overtake and you need to slow down.

  • Double solid yellow lines do not allow vehicles on both sides to overtake.  You may only cross the lines when entering or leaving a driveway or side street or making a permitted U-turn.

  • Yellow “X” within the intersection means you have to keep intersection open.

  • Pedestrian Lanes are pedestrian crosswalks.  Always yield to pedestrians.
